Hello! My son recently turned 5 and will be starting kindergarten in the fall. For the past couple of years I have had some suspicions that he might be gifted. Now that he is about to start school I am concerned as to how he will do in the public school system. The public schools here are quite good but the gifted program is only a once a week pull-out program and I am not sure that would be enough. I am wondering if I should get him tested in order to get some feedback as to what his skills are and what type of school would be best in meeting his needs? I want to ensure he is properly diagnosed and properly educated. I would welcome your feedback as to if you think my son may be gifted and if so how should I proceed with his education.

Some specific characteristics regarding my son: He was very alert as a baby and was smiling at two weeks. He was walking at 10 months and could jump with both feet off the ground at 15 months. He reached many cognitive milestones early. He knew all colors and most shapes by 15-18 months. The alphabet both upper and lowercase as well as phonics by 2 ½. Started rhyming words at 2 ½, sounding out words at 3 and also knew several sight words at that time. Realized at 4 ½ he could read though mainly beginner books and now at 5 is reading level 1 and 2 books. He was writing his name at 3 and all letters by 4. Counted to 10 at 24 months both rote and 1-to-1 correspondence

At 3 he was counting to 100 and at 4 could count to 1,000 ( In the car one day he wanted to count to 1,000 when he got to 500 he said this is taking to long 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000 there 1,000). Started doing simple addition and subtraction at 3 as well, all in his head, and knew that 3 + 2 is the same as 2 + 3, etc. Did not have the early speech typical of gifted children. He talked at an average age. Maybe 10-20 words at 17 months and then at 18 months speech took off. 3-4 word sentences by 2. Probably has above average vocabulary but not extremely different from peers.

Fast forward to now….loves to play with large numbers. Asking “what comes after a trillion?” Can count backwards from 20 and count to 100 by 10’s. Is doing beginning multiplication and understands fractions. He saw something on TV about fractions and that was all it took for him to get the concept. Told me “mommy do you want ¼ of my cookie? See I broke it in 4 pieces, the number on the bottom is how many pieces I have total, and the number on top is the number of pieces I gave you so you have ¼ of my cookie”. Loves mazes and from age 3-4 went through every maze book I could find. Now draws his own often pretty complex mazes. Loves to build with Legos and very good with logic games. Independent on computer since 2 ½.

Also, he has a fantastic imagination. Many imaginary friends over the years. Asks complex questions. The other day he asked “mommy if babies come from their mommy who made the first baby because it would not have a mother to give birth to it? “ Did God make the first baby, if so who made God? Maybe he came from the universe” He has an amazing memory, quite incredible all he remembers. Very curious and energetic. Socially, he does well 1 on 1 but can be uncomfortable in large groups especially at first. At school his preschool teacher said when he gets there he needs a good 30 minutes to warm up but after that is playing well with kids. Mentioned his thinking skills are very advanced for his age and that he may be gifted.

I am sorry this is so long! I am not sure what information is relevant. I guess my questions are: 1) Do you believe he is gifted? 2) If so, what is the best educational system for him? 3) Should I have him tested? 4) How can I help him feel more comfortable in his own skin and increase his confidence in large and

First question: Yes, your son is gifted, probably fairly highly gifted. Second question: The absolute ideal would be for him to be taught the material in a condensed form, such that he'd basically learn several years' worth of material in a single school year. In addition, most gifted kids also benefit from a different teaching style that involves much more emphasis on underlying concepts - most kids are not expected to understand the underlying concepts, but if they could, it circumvents the need for a lot of rote teaching. Many gifted kids are also highly curious and motivated to learn about certain topics, and therefore benefit from a more self-directed style where they get to choose the topic they study.

Third question: If testing can make him eligible for a program he'd benefit from, or if you're interested in knowing the results, then you should test him. But if it's possible to get him the educational style he needs without being tested, then testing is optional. Fourth question: He might benefit from a smaller class. In addition, there are various 'getting to know you' activities that can be done, such as having each child say a bit about themselves, which might help him warm up quicker. However, it's not that big a deal, so probably the best course of action would be to just let him watch silently for the first little bit.

Kecerdasan ialah istilah umum yang digunakan untuk menjelaskan sifat pikiran yang mencakup sejumlah kemampuan, seperti kemampuan menalar, merencanakan, memecahkan masalah, berpikir abstrak, memahami gagasan, menggunakan bahasa, dan belajar.istilah umumpikiranmenalarmerencanakan memecahkan masalahabstrakbahasabelajar Problem solving ability Verbal ability Social competence Information processing skills Experience with task Ability to adapt to the demands of a context
