Definisi Teknik Industri “Industrial Engineering is concerned with the design, improvement and installation of integrated systems of people, materials, equipment and energy. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skill in the mathematical, physical and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict and evaluate the result to be obtained from such systems” (Industrial Engineering Handbook; Institute of Industrial Engineers, Industrial Engineering and Management Press, 1983, Page 207)

Definisi Teknik Industri Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) The profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgement to develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind. Lebih jauh lagi, karakteristik utama dari keilmuan engineering adalah perancangan (design) yang didefenisikan sebagai : a systematic, intelligent process in which designers generate, evaluate, and specify concepts for devices, systems, or processes whose form and function achieve clients’ objectives or users’ needs while satisfying a specified set of constraints (Dym, et. al., 2005).
