Leadership Training Programs Formal training are widely used to improve leadership in organizations Leadership training program are designed to increase generic skills and behavior relevant for managerial effectiveness and advancement. The target is usually for lower and middle management

Designing Effective Training (1) Clear Learning Objective; describe the behaviors, skills, or knowledge trainess are expected to acquire Clear, meaningful content; uses lots of examples that are concrete and relevant, case study Appropriate sequencing of content; pre-requisite, from simple to complex things Appropriate Mix of Training Methods; role playing, lecturing, discussion shifting in a manner of time Opportunity for Active Practice; practice the skills to be learned

Designing Effective Training (2) Relevant, timely feedback; Trainees should receive relevant feedback Enhancement of Trainee Self-Confidence; trainer should encourage and give a chance to trainee to develop their confidence Appropriate Follow-Up activities; Complex skills are difficult to learn in short training course, so it needs appropriate activity to enhance the complex skills.

Emotional Intelligence Effective Leader are truly distinguished by a high degree of Emotional Intelligence/EI (Goleman, 1998) EI means: the individual capability to handle ourselves, and each other; managing feelings so that they are expressed appropriately and effectively EI is not the same with IQ, it could be a large changes and it continues to develop through life and learn from experiences

5 Komponen EI 1. Self-awareness (Kesadaran diri) kemampuan untuk mengenali dan mengerti perasaaan, emosi dan mengerti perasaan dirinya dan bagaimana perasaan dirinya memberikan efek kepada orang lain dan kinerja organisasi. Kesadaran diri juga dapat berarti sebagai, bahwa seseorang dapat mengetahui misi, nilai dan tujuan dirinya. 2. Self- regulation (Pengaturan diri) kemampuan seseorang untuk mengontrol kegundahan hati, suasana hati yang tidak baik dan lain-lain. Contoh: self talk positive pemimpin yang tidak mempunyai pengontrolan emosi yang baik cenderung langsung memarahi bawahannya yg melakukan kesalahan. Namun pemimpin dengan pengontrolan emosi yang baik cenderung untuk mengerti masalah, mencari sebab utama kenapa terjadi masalah itu lalu memilih kata-kata yang baik dan memberi penjelasan yang baik kepada bawahannya.

5 Komponen EI 3. Motivation (Motivasi) Motivasi merupakan modal yang dimiliki semua pemimpin, pemimpin yang efektif seharusnya dapat memotivasi dirinya dengan baik akan mampu memotivasi bawahannya untuk tetap semangat dalam bekerja. Kunci utama disini adalah untuk meraih tujuan yang ingin diraih, dimana banyak orang bermotivasi karena faktor eksternal seperti gaji dan status. 4. Empathy (Empati) Empati adalah ikut merasakan perasaan orang lain. Seorang pemimpin yang memiliki rasa empati maka mempertimbangkan perasaan bawahannya dalam mengambil keputusan tentu dengan tidak melupakan faktor-faktor lainnya. 5. Sosialisasi (Social Skill) kemampuan bersosialisasi dengan siapapun tanpa adanya batas. Pemimpin yang hebat dalam sosialisasi cenderung mempunyai jaringan network yang luas dan baik sehingga dapat membantu dalam mengambil keputusan bagi organisasi.
