Basic types of listening Intensive: listening for perception of components of a larger stretch of language Responsive: listening to relatively short stretch of language in order to make an equally short response. Selective: Processing stretches of discourse such as short monologues for several minutes in order to "scan" for certain information. Extensive: listening to develop a top-down, global understanding of spoken language.

Designing assessment task: intensive listening Recognizing phonological and morphological elements: A classic test task gives a spoken stimulus and asks test-takers to identify the stimulus from two or more choices.

Paraphrase recognition: the scale of listening comprehension microskills is words, phrases, and sentences and asking the test-taker to choose the correct paraphrase from a number of choices.
