P EMROGRAMAN S ISTEM B ASIS D ATA Chapter I Database Sistem
2
I N THIS CHAPTER, YOU WILL LEARN : Perbedaan Data dan Informasi Pengertian Database Pentingnya Design Database
3
D ATA VS. I NFORMATION Data: – Kumpulan Fakta; Blok informasi. – Proses yang belum diolah. Information: – Data yang diproses yang mengandung arti / berguna Accurate, relevant, and timely information adalah kunci untuk good decision making Good decision making is key to survival in global environment

5
D ATABASE ? Database ( Share, Integrated) End user data (raw facts) Metadata (data about data) a collection of data, typically describing the activities of one or more related organizations
6
E XAMPLE OF D ATABASE Sebuah Universitas yang mungkin mengandung informasi seperti Berikut : Entities seperti students, faculty, courses, and classrooms Reletionships antara entities seperti Mahasiswa enrollment (didaftarkan) di course, course yang ada pada fakultas, jumlah classroom yang digunakan untuk courses.
7
M EANING OF DBMS DBMS (database management system): Collection of programs that manages database structure and controls access to data Possible to share data among multiple applications or users Makes data management more efficient and effective is software designed to assist in maintaining and utilizing large collections of data
8
DBMS M AKES D ATA M ANAGEMENT M ORE E FFICIENT AND E FFECTIVE End users have better access to more and better- managed data : Dapat melihat gambaran umum tentang data perusahaan yang sudah terintegrasi. Berkurangnya inkonsisten data. Dapat membuat kesimpulan / jawaban dari query khusus dengan cepat.

T YPES OF D ATABASES Single-user: Supports only one user at a time Desktop: Single-user database running on a personal computer Multi-user: Supports multiple users at the same time Workgroup: Multi-user database that supports a small group of users or a single department Enterprise: Multi-user database that supports a large group of users or an entire organization
11
L OCATION OF D ATABASES Centralized: Supports data located at a single site Distributed: Supports data distributed across several sites
12
U SES OF D ATABASES Transactional (or production): Supports a company’s day-to-day operations Data warehouse: Stores data used to generate information required to make tactical or strategic decisions Such decisions typically require ―data massaging ‖ Often used to store historical data Structure is quite different
13
W HY D ATABASE D ESIGN IS I MPORTANT Defines the database’s expected use Different approach needed for different types of databases Avoid redundant data (unnecessarily duplicated) Poorly designed database generates errors leads to bad decisions can lead to failure of organization
