The belief that: Abnormal behavior is always bizzarre: tidak selalu, disebut abnormal karena self defeating dan maladaptif “normal” and “abnormal” behavior are different in kind - sharp dividing line does not exist - normal distribution - normal and abnormal behavior  attempt to cope with life problems as the individual perceives them

Former mental patients as unstable or dangerous (  mental disorders = incurable) Lebih banyak yang merupakan ancaman bagi dirinya sendiri, daripada untuk orang lain Mental disorder is something to be ashamed of - baik penyakit fisik ataupun mental harus dilihat sebagai kegagalan adaptasi (adaptive failures) Mental disorder is something magical or awe-inspiring - sering dianggap mempunyai supernatural powers An exagerated fear of one’s own susceptibility to mental disorders - fears of possible mental disorder are quite common and cause much needless unhappiness - most people feel anxious and discouraged during difficult periods in their life

5 Apa yang disebut abnormal?
Abnormal Psychology: that part of the field of psychology concerned with the understanding, treatment and prevention of abnormal behavior Sekarang merupakan bagian dari clinical psychology: the professional field broadly concerned with the study, assessment, treatment and prevention of abnormal behavior Psychiatry is the corresponding field in medicine

6 Social work which evolved as a result of volunteer charities, is concerned with the analysis of social environment and with providing services which assist the adjustment of the patient both in family and community settings Psychopathology is another term used to refer to the study of abnormal behavior Professionals must work out definitions of “normal” and “abnormal”, and develop criteria for distinguishing one from the other in real life. UNFORTUNATELY THIS IS NOT ALWAYS EASY.
