Discussion Text is a text which present a problematic discourse. This Problem will be discussed from different point of view.

To present information and opinion about more than one side of an issue. ( Discuss a problem in two different point of view)

GENERIC STRUCTURE OF DISCUSSION TEXT:

1.INTRODUCTION OPENING STATEMENT PRESENTING AN ISSUE / A TOPIC TO DISCUSSED

2. ARGUMENTS PRO CONTRA

3. CONCLUSION / RECOMMENDATION STATING THE WRITER RECOMMENDATION OF THE DISCOURSE THE CONCLUTION / THE RECOMMENDATION SHOULD BE NEUTRAL / DON’T BE TAKE SIDES

LANGUAGE FEATURES :  The use of general nouns ( alcohol, abortion, smoking, etc )  The use of relating verbs ( is, are, etc )  The use of thinking verbs ( think, feel, believe, etc )  The use of additive connectives ( in addition, furthermore, etc )  The use of constrastive connectives ( although, even if, etc )  The use of causal connectives ( Because, because of, etc )  The use of modalities ( Perhaps, must, should, etc )  The use of adverb of manner ( hopefully, deliberately, etc )

Example : Abbortion: Pro and Contra Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen, First of all, Let me to thank the Organising Committee for giving me the opportunity to say a few words at this seminar. In this occasion I’d like to speak about “ Abortion Pro and Contra “. Abbortion is an effort to make the baby disappear from the mom’s womb. Nowadays, there are many cases about abortion in our country, even in legal or illegal ways. I would like to talk about it in different ways. Issue/ Topic Opening Statement Presenting the issue

Example : On one hand, abortion is one method of birth control. Let’s look the fact about the population problem in this country. When a country faces the problems of population explosion, the government should find methods to solved it. But, since no method of contraception is 100% effective and successful, abortion becomes the only way out when prevention fails. Pro Arguments Cons Arguments On the other hand, abortion may cause many negative effects for women’s health. Women risk their health and lives in bearing the weight of the operation and its consequences. The most common complication are inflammation, interruption of menstrual pattern, infertility, endometriosis, myoma of the uterus, and many other kinds of ovary ilnesess Conclusion I think, so far abortions have become a dilemma for countries with a large number of citizens. Abortion can be done if there is no other way out when prevention fails and it should under the doctor’s surveillance because it brings terrible consequences especially for women’s health.
