Reality Therapy William Glasser: Choice theory is about making better choices, but we have to understand the reason for bad choices BEFORE we can make good ones Read – Introduction; p. 168 Glasser strongly emphasizes the distinction between relationship- destroying external control psychology, based on the ancient – I know what is right for you – tradition, and choice theory, which gives people the freedom to sustain healthy relationship and lead productive lives.

BASIC CONCEPTS Glasser: Choice theory explains that, for all practical purposes, we choose everything we do, including the misery we feel. The 10 axioms of choice theory: 1. Perilaku yang dapat kita kontrol hanyalah diri kita sendiri 2.Yang kita berikan / terima dari individu lain adalah INFORMASI 3. Masalah psikologis yang umumnya terjadi adalah RELATIONSHIP PROBLEM 4. Relationship problem SENANTIASA merupakah bagian dari hidup hari ini 5. Memikirkan masa lalu yang menyakitkan tidak memberikan manfaat bagi relationship hari ini

BASIC CONCEPTS 6.Perilaku ditentukan oleh 5 bentuk kebutuhan dasar: Survival, love and belonging, power, freedom 7.Pemuasan kebutuhan tersebut dapat dilakukan dengan cara “satisfying a picture or pictures in our quality worlds” 8.Semua perilaku merupakan TOTAL BEHAVIOUR dan terbentuk dari 4 komponen yang tak terpisahkan: acting, thingking, feeling, and physiology 9.Total behaviour ditentukan oleh kata-kata yang mudah dikenal di dalam 4 komponen tsb.  “saya depresi” 10.All total behaviour adalah pilihan  kita memilih bagaimana kita berperilaku dan berpikir

BASIC NEEDS & FEELINGS Choice theory sees humans as driven by basic needs that are genetic in origin: Survival: setiap individu memiliki kebutuhan untuk selamat. Love, Loving, sex and belonging Power: Perkawinan dan persahabatan yang baik merupakan dasar dari kekuatan yang sama (equal power) Freedom FUN

THE QUALITY WORLD Personal picture albums are a small and selective part of TOTAL MEMORY Glasser called it : THE QUALITY OF WORLD The pictures in people’s quality worlds fall into 3 categories: * The people they most want to be with: * The things they most want to own or experience; * The ideas or systems of belief that govern much of their behaviour Glasser observed: anytime we feel good, we are choosing to behave so that someone, something, or some belief in the real world has come close to matching a person, thing, or belief in our quality worlds. All pictures are need-fulfilling. People must have at least one picture in their quality worlds for every need.

THERAPEUTIC GOALS Glasser: The therapy or counselling I practice is called reality therapy. It is based on choice theory and focuses on improving present relationships, almost always disregards past relationship, and depends for its success on creating a good relationship between the client and the counsellor Reality therapy didasari oleh choice theory dan berfokus pada pengingkatan hubungan, seringkali mengesampingkan hubungan yang terjadi di masa lalu, dan suksesnya sebuah reality therapy bergantung pada hubungan yang baik antara klien dan konselor

THERAPEUTIC GOALS 1. Terapis menginformasikan kepada klien tentang framework dari therapy reality untuk memahami perilakunya 2. Meningkatkan kesadaran (awareness) klien tentang pilihan perilaku mereka dan bagaimana mereka mengontrol dunia melalui perilakunya 3. Meningkatkan “sense of responsibility” klien untuk membuat pilihan- pilihan yang bermanfaat bagi dirinya 4. Membantu klien utnuk mengidentifikasikan dan memahami kebutuhan dasar mereka untuk survival, belonging, power, freedom dan fun

THERAPEUTIC GOALS 5. Membantu klien untuk memiliki gambar yang realistik untuk memenuhi kebutuhannya 6. Mengajarkan kepada klien untuk mengevaluasi efektivitas keseluruhan perilakunya 7. Membantu klien untuk mengembangkan dan mengimplementasikan perilaku tertentu yang akan membantunya untuk memenuhi kebutuhannya saat ini dan akan datang, tanpa merugikan kebutuhan yang lainnya 8. Membantu klien untuk menghindari dirinya dikontrol oleh perilaku negatif dari individu lain.

PROCESS OF THERAPY Menggunakan teknik mendengarkan secara baik Menanyakan Apa yang diinginkan oleh Klien Menanyakan Apa yang dikerjakan oleh klien dan tujuannya secara umum Meminta klien untuk melakukan Self-evaluation Meminta klien untuk membuat perencanaan untuk memenuhi kebutuhannya secara efektif THE THERAPEUTIC RELATIONSHIP IS VERY IMPORTANT: Atmosfir dalam hubungan konseling: Terkontrol dan Ramah (firmness & friendliness) Klien dan terapis berusaha untuk menemukan pola perilaku yang efektif bagi klien Klien dan terapis diharapkan untuk menggunakan humor Terapis hendaknya memiliki KOMITMEN yang kuat terhadap klien Terapis seringkali harus mengatakan: “ Jangan membiarkan diri Anda DIKONTROL dan juga jangan PUTUS ASA
