What is a Relative Pronoun? A relative pronoun is a part of speech in that it is a word that replaces a noun. However, a relative pronoun begins a relative clause. A relative clause modifies a noun. Relative pronoun goal to explain, give more information or describe noun or pronoun. Form: Relative Clause = Relative Pronoun +/- Subject + Verb Complex Sentence = Independent Clause + Relative Clause

Who Who is a subject pronoun, which means it can be used as the subject of a sentence or clause. It can only be used to refer to people. Who is a type of relative pronoun that is used to explain, give information or describe people in the previous clause. So, this Who is usually used for: Substitute pronouns which mean THAT Used for humans as subjects Words are usually followed by verbs Used to combine two sentences as subject substitute in the second sentence.

F or example, “Do you know who called earlier?” Here, the main clause is Do you know? The main verb know applies to the dependent clause, who called earlier. Who performs the action call, which makes it the subject of the dependent clause

Which The function of which are to connect noun objects, animals, or sometimes people (subject / object of sentence) with a relative clause. Which is more specific than what. In relative clause, relative pronoun refers to the subject or object. So, Which is used for: A conjunction word which means THAT Used for inanimate objects or animals as subjects or objects There are similarities with the use of Who and Whom namely as objects

For example: I find a book, it belong to me = I find a book which belong to me. We enter to the restaurant, it sells drink only = we enter to the restaurant which sell drink only.

For example: Cats that live in the wild may have a better immune system. The laptop that I bought five years ago is still work properly.

Whose This is usually used for: Interchange pronoun which means that Used for humans or living things as belonging. Whose is a possessive pronoun. It gives more information about a person by describing things that belong to them.

Take this example: “This park is for people whose dogs need a place to play.” The park isn’t for all people. It’s only for those with dogs who need a place to play. So, whose dogs need a place to play is a dependent clause. Whose describes the kinds of people who can use the park.

Whom Whom is a more formal form of who. Whom is often preceded by a preposition (functions as an object of preposition). This relative pronoun functions as an object in a relative clause. So, whom are used for: pronoun connecting the meaning of THAT; Used for humans whose positions are objects; Used as a substitute for the patient noun in the second sentence; After combining the sentence, it must be followed by a basic noun.

For example: He is the one for whom I’m waiting. The team whom you were watching has won three gold medals.
