FrontPage adalah perangkat lunak (software) untuk memdesain web. Juga bisa digunakan untuk pengaturan website. Anda bis menggunakannya untuk : Menambah, mengganti nama, menghapus, memindahkan file-file (tanpa menggunakan Windows Explorer). Memperbaiki masalah-masalah menggunakan special reports, seperti report link yang terputus. Publikasi Web site menggunakan FrontPage. (lanjut ke slide berikut)

Yang penting diingat adalah bahwa fitur atau fasilitas pengaturan file tidak bisa digunakan saat mengerjakan file-file HTML yang berdiri sendiri. Fitur ini hanya bisa digunakan saat anda membuka dan bekerja pada Website FrontPage. Apa yang dimaksud dengan Website FrontPage ?

4 Pengertian Website FrontPage
Web site FrontPage adalah keseluruhan situs web (website) yang dibuat menggunakan FrontPage. Termasuk didalamnya halaman-halaman Web, gambar, dokumen, multimedia—hampir semua jenis file. Website FrontPage juga memiliki folder tersembunyi dan file-file yang mendukung fasilitas khusus FrontPage. Item yang tersembunyi itu adalah metadata FrontPage untuk situs anda. Saat anda membuka website FrontPage, tab Web Site akan tampil pada bagian atas.

5 Tentang Metadata FrontPage
Meta data FrontPage adalah informasi tentang website FrontPage yang memungkinkan adanya pengaturan website. Data ini dimanfaatkan oleh FrontPage untuk melakukan semua fitur-fitur mangemen file yang disebutkan sebelumnya (membuat dan memindahkan file, menjalankan report, publikasi, dan lainnya). The illustration here shows what a FrontPage Web site looks like outside of the FrontPage program. When Windows Explorer is configured to show hidden files and folders, you can see the additional FrontPage metadata folders, like the _vti_cnf folder and the _vti_pvt folder. The _vti_cnf folder contains information about every file, such as which links are within the file and who modified the file and when. The _vti_pvt folder stores all of the configuration information for the site, for example, which subsites are in the Web site and the permission configurations for the site.

Ada dua jenis website FrontPage : website berbasis disk (disk-based) website berbasis server (server-based) In short, a disk-based site is a FrontPage Web site you create on your local hard disk and then later publish to a Web server. A server-based site is one you create and work with directly on a Web server, without the extra step of publishing. Each kind has a clear advantage. When you're done reading about them on the following pages, you should be able to know which one is right for you.

7 Website Berbasis Disk Web site berbasis disk adalah website yang dibuat pada harddisk komputer anda. Setelah selesai mendesain dan menyelesaikannya website pada komputer anda, kemudian dipublikasikan ke lokasi terkontrol seperti Web server. Disk-based sites are the most commonly used because they have a clear advantage: you can edit and test them on your hard drive before they go live. This is something that you will definitely want to do if your site has the potential to impact people in any kind of substantial way. For example, it's probably wise to create and test a disk-based site if it lists product prices. You'd want to test and review the pricing pages to make sure each price is accurate. Another example would be if someone is paying for an advertisement on your site. You'd want to test the appearance and the hyperlink for the ad to make sure it goes to the right place, right? Note: Some FrontPage features rely on the server and cannot be tested when using a disk-based site. For example, if you insert a hit counter, it will not function on your local hard disk, but it will when you publish your site to a server.

Website berbasis server website yang dibuat dan dikelola langsung pada sebuah webserver. Begitu terjadi perubahan, bisa langsung dilihat orang lain di web tersebut. Catatan Untuk menggunakan website berbasis server, website FrontPage anda harus dijalankan pada server yang memiliki fasilitas FrontPage Server Extensions atau SharePoint Services.
