2 History of the American Labor Movement 14.7 million U.S. workers still belong to unions about 11.9% of the total number of men and women working in this country. Many are still blue- collar workers.

3 Why do Workers Organize? The bottom line is that the urge to unionize often boils down to the belief on the part of workers that it is only through unity that they can protect themselves from unilateral management whims

4 WHAT DO UNIONS WANT?

5 The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) is a voluntary federation of about 56 national and International labor unions in the United States. The separate AFL and CIO merged in For many people in the United States, the AFL-CIO is synonymous with the word union. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is a fast-growing federation of more than 2.2 million members. It includes the largest healthcare union, with more than 1.1 million members in the field, including nurses, LPNs, and doctors, and the second largest public employees union, with more than 1 million local and state government workers.
