earthquake followed by a Tsunami struck Aceh. On 26 December 2004, a powerful earthquake followed by a Tsunami struck Aceh. Many communities were affected with loss of lives, property, infrastructure & livelihoods.
Earthquake damage was limited; Tsunami damage was immense.
Few people were injured, but over 100,000 died - the majority of them women & children. Over 100,000 were missing.
On 28 March 2005 another earthquake caused major damage to the islands of Nias & Simeulue.
