All Livestock Exports 2014 to 2018

History of the trade and reviews  ​​​​​​ The first exports of live sheep from Australia took place over 150 years ago. Since then, livestock exports to over 60 countries have grown into a valuable Australian industry that is worth over $800 million each year and supports the livelihood of many people in rural and regional Australia.  The livestock species that Australia exports for slaughter and breeding are cattle, sheep, goats, buffalo, deer, and camelids such as camels and alpacas. The first three of these species dominate the volume and value of livestock exports.  The 1970s and early 1980s saw development in the export of live sheep to the Middle East. Today, the Middle Eastern countries Jordan, Kuwait and Qatar are the principal destinations for live sheep. Turkey is also imports large numbers of live sheep from Australia.  Export of live cattle developed later than that for sheep, but cattle are now exported to a wide range of destinations. Indonesia takes by far the largest number of slaughter cattle, followed by Israel and Turkey. There is an important trade in export of breeder dairy heifers to China, Russia and other destinations.

Reviews and reforms  The welfare of animals and the livelihood of Australians working in rural and regional communities are important considerations in the export of live animals. The Australian Government has a responsibility to the animal producers, exporters and service industries who rely on the export of livestock for their income; the exported animals that are dependent on exporters and government to ensure their welfare; and the broader Australian community, which expects government to enforce standards that reflect their values.  The most significant reform of the livestock export trade has been the introduction in July 2011 of the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS). Reviews and reforms  ​​​​​​​ In 2017, we commissioned a review of the Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock (ASEL). The sea and air voyage components of the ASEL are being reviewed sequentially.  A Technical Advisory Committee was appointed to conduct the review, including an independent chair and experts in animal health and welfare, regulatory design and the livestock industry.Technical Advisory Committee  The review of the sea component was undertaken in two stages.  In Stage 1, the committee sought feedback on a proposed reformatted version of the standards and a draft work plan.Stage 1  During Stage 2, the committee consulted widely on an issues paper and draft standards. Then the committee consulted on a dra ​ ft report and further working draft of the reformatted standards.issues paperdra ​ ft report  The committee has completed its review of exports by sea and has provided its final report to us. The committee made 49 recommendations that address different parts of the standard; from sourcing and preparation, through to management of livestock on- board vessels. We have prepared a response to the committee’s recommendations.  Implementation of the recommendations will be staged in consultation with industry.

Reviews and reforms In 2017, Australia exported a total of 2,845,802 live cattle (beef and dairy), sheep and goats that were valued at $1.4 billion FOB. Of the livestock exported, there were:  826,214 head of beef cattle;  51,976 head of dairy cattle;  1,953,918 head of sheep; and  13,694 head of goats.  Our largest export markets (by volume) in 2017 were:  Kuwait taking 646,822 sheep and 604 cattle (22.7% of all exported livestock);  Qatar taking 640,000 sheep and 1,648 cattle (22.5% of all exported livestock); and  Indonesia taking 509,972 cattle, 24 sheep and 7 goats (18% of all exported livestock).  (Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics) For species-specific information, on cattle, sheep, goats or dairy cattle, click the links below.
