What is Hexose Monophosphate pathway? Pentose phosphate pathway is an alternative pathway to glycolysis for oxidation of glucose. It is also known as hexose monophosphate (HMP) shunt or phosphogluconate pathway. It occurs in cytoplasm of both prokaryotes and eukaryotes (ex. Acetobacter xylinum). Pentose phosphate pathway starts with glucose and it is a multi-steps reaction. The results of this pathway are 1 pyruvate, 1 acetyl phosphate, 1 CO2, 1 ATP and 3 NAD (P) H. This pathway also produces ribulose 5-phosphate which is a nucleotide precursor.
