Organizational Culture (1) The way we do things around here The shared philosophies, ideologies, values, assump- tions, beliefs, experiences, attitudes and norms that knit a community together (Kilman, Sexton and Serpa, 1985: 5) A pattern of basic assumptions – invented, discovered or developed by a given group as it learns to cope with ist problems of external adaptation and internal integration – that has worked well enough to be considered valid and, therefore, to be taught to new members as the correct way to perceive, think and feel in relation to this problems (Schein, 1985: 9)
Organizational Culture (2) Culture is learned set of behaviours how culture might be changed Many writers stress the link between culture and leadership two sides of the same coin Organizational cultures are created by leaders one of their most important roles is to manage culture The ideas of underlying assumptions and shared values and beliefs along with the critical importance of leadership are central to the concept of culture
